TCK….TCK…TCK…..GREEN PARTY
CLIMATE EMERGENCY ACTION!
SUNDAY, 12/6 IN BROOKLYN
TELL PRESIDENT OBAMA:
“LEAD THE FIGHT AGAINST GLOBAL
WARMING IN COPENHAGEN -
STAND UP TO CLIMATE-COOKING
COAL CORPORATIONS!”
Please join The Green Party of Brooklyn, the
Park Slope Greens, Parents for Climate Protection
and other groups in Park Slope, Brooklyn, at 3pm on the
corner of 3rd St & 5th Ave – Sunday, Dec 6th to pledge
our community’s support for climate change legislation
that follows the demands of The EARTH, not big business.
* We’ll gather dozens of ice globes made by YOU and your
neighbors (go to www.gpbk.org to learn how to make them
or see what they look like) — and display them by
candlelight as the sun sets
* Pledge cards will be on hand so you can send a personal
message to the President that now is the time to save our
planet
* Local environmental activists and climate change experts
will be on hand to answer your questions and talk about what’s
next in the climate change movement
***
During his election campaign, Barack Obama promised to “restore
science” to the fight against global warming.*
But on November 25 the president proposed an emissions reductions
target of just 17% below 2005 levels by 2020, however this is just
a tiny fraction of what scientists says is needed. Now, as Obama
plans for his Dec 9 visit to Copenhagen, it’s time for us to let
him know we expect this country to join the European Union, Japan
and Great Britain in setting a target that will cut down the risks
of climate change on our future.
Now is not the time for small plans! The US is responsible for 30%
of the global warming pollution in our atmosphere today. Yet we are
just 5% of the world’s population. The U.S. coal industry alone emits
almost as much global warming pollution –8%– than India and Africa
combined - that’s 2.3 billion people! The U.S. must take responsibility
for our pollution.
Come to 3rd Street and 5th Avenue on December 6th, bring your ice globe,
and take a stand for our future! Email iceglobes@gpbk.org or call
718-369-2998 to tell us how many you’re bringing or if you have any questions.
*Science calls for the United States and the developed world to cut pollution
by at least 25 to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2020, and to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions 80 to 95 percent by 2050.

DAVID PECHEFSKY CAMPAIGN
WRAP-UP AND THANK YOU!
A very heartfelt thanks to all of you for your support, time,
and effort. I feel very happy with the race we ran — it was
principled, engaging, substantive, and fun.
By now many of you have seen the numbers and the truth is that
I cannot help but feel disappointed. According to the unofficial
count we got about 1,500 votes or 7%. (Although our own tally from
the polls we closed was closer to 1,750). All day long yesterday,
people — many of whom I had never seen before - passed me giving
me the thumbs up, or came up to shake my hand, or after a last
minute entreaty from me or one of my team came back from the poll
saying “I voted for you.” And the numbers we got from MS 51 where
I ended the night were closer to 20% so I really was feeling pretty
good walking to our party.
How to explain it? Of course one thing is that the two-party system
is so entrenched that it is very, very hard to get people to vote
otherwise. But here are a couple of ways of looking at the numbers
that tell a more positive story.
First there are only about 360 registered Greens in district. So even
discounting for those who voted for me mostly out of personal loyalty,
we probably got over 1,000 non-Greens to vote Green.
Brad Landers’s (D) vote total represented the equivalent of 30% of
registered Democrats. Joe Nardiello’s (R) 40% of registered Republicans.
But ours 400% of registered Greens!
We also gained more votes than 2 of the 5 Dems who ran in the primary,
despite those two being good candidates who considerably outspent us.
And in Park Slope we beat the Republican by 957 votes to 517, gaining 19%
of the total! The difference between these numbers and the overall outcome
highlights that the 39th Council District, which extends from Cobble Hill to
Borough Park is not a “Park Slope District” nor for that matter a particularly
progressive district; although the fact that the Democratic nominee tends be
someone deemed progressive makes it very hard for a challenger from the left.
I hope this puts things in perspective a little bit.
And certainly no other campaign brought more smiles to people’s faces then we
did with the funny t-shirts and our high spirits, nor was more fun for kids
with our activity book and free puppet shows.
For a nice summary of the campaign please read Louise Crawford’s piece in
Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn: (this should be all one line but we had to put it on two)
www.onlytheblogknowsbrooklyn.typepad.com//only_the_blog_knows_brook/2009/11/the-hardest-working-candidate-in-brooklyn-david-pechefsky.html
So, was it the right thing to do?
Absolutely, not the least because of the all the new friends I made and the
old friends I reconnected with.
And in political terms? Absolutely. Many people asked me in the course of the
campaign why with my strong resume etc. I wasn’t running as a Democrat so I would
“have a chance at winning.” No way! The City Council doesn’t need any more
deal-making Democrats who compromise their principles to get appointed the chair
of some good sounding committee etc. etc. and the political system as a whole
needs to be pushed on the Green party principles of ecological wisdom, social
justice, grassroots democracy, and non-violence.
So keep an eye out for us Greens and consider coming to some Park Slope Greens meetings.
We usually meet the second Monday of the month at the Methodist Church on 6th Avenue and
8th Street. There is lots to be done.
Best,
David

A MESSAGE FROM THE GREEN PARTY
OF NEW YORK STATE
Vote Green Party today!
Fellow Green Party members,
Election Day is upon us today, Tuesday, November 3rd.
This year we have a dozen strong candidates across the
state running for election or re-election on the Green
Party line. The Green Party represents a real choice in
the usually sordid world of New York State politics.
Greens around the state have been fighting against the
spoiling of our wilderness, harmful gas drilling upstate,
for single-payer universal health care, affordable housing,
living wage jobs, same-sex marriage equality, and against
climate change. Help us put them over the top by giving
last-minute donations to their campaigns, volunteering to
help on election day, or just getting the word out to
friends and family in their districts.
Polls will be open from 6:00am-9:00pm for New York City, Nassau,
Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam and Erie counties.
For other counties, 12:00noon-9:00pm.

In This Message:
Very Sad News
*************************************
The Park Slope Greens are extremely sad to report that Estelle Epstein,
one of our most enthusiastic and dedicated members, passed away last week.
Into her 90s, Estelle was one of the most energetic and concerned activists
one could ever meet. She had an extremely sharp and analytical mind, as well
as being a veracious reader. She was part of many activist groups and regularly
attended meetings of her own community board. She was concerned about many
issues of our day, but she had a particular concern about the abolition of nuclear
weapons and she put much energy into that cause.
Estelle would attend Park Slope Greens Meetings as often as she could, always coming
with a major concern that she wished the group to take action on. Estelle was full
of wisdom and always had a story or joke to tell. She had a quirky and funny personality
and when you got to know her, you could not help but see what a sweet and loving person
she was, who thought about others needs and wanted to help if she could.
After 9/11, The Park Slope Greens and The War Resisters League held a weekly peace vigil on Flatbush Avenue for over a year. Estelle came to the vigil each week, rain or shine.
Although it was not physically easy for her, she stood the entire time, even when other
(much younger and healthier!) people either did not attend, or did not stay for long.
In recent years, when Estelle was homebound, she insisted on continuing to do political
work as best she could. Working with a friend who helped with web research, Estelle
contacted the theater departments of colleges lobbying them to do a revival of Bury the
Dead, which she thought would help educate people about war.
Estelle dedicated most of her life to political activism and to making the world a better place. The world has lost an activist of the highest moral fiber. Estelle died after bravely battling many illnesses and we will miss her tremendously.
We hope to put together an evening to honor Estelle’s memory as soon as possible.
More about that to come.

DAVID PECHEFSKY CAMPAIGN
FOR NYC COUNCIL - DIST 39
ELECTION DAY IS LESS THAN
ONE WEEK AWAY….THIS IS IT!!
Election Day is LESS THAN ONE WEEK AWAY and we could still use
more volunteers. Even if you can’t work the entire day, please
consider coming out for one or both of the most crucial shifts:
from 6 to 9 AM and/or from 5 to 9 PM or if you have a few hours
during the day, anytime late morning - late afternoon. We will
have a new brochure to hand out, showing people where to find
David on the ballot! Please let me know when you can work by
contacting Jonathan at jonathan@pechefskyforcitycouncil.com,
especially those of you who live in district and would like to work
at your own polling site.
Do you know someone who needs a ride to the polls? Let us know
because we have a volunteer with a seven-person van who is willing
transport people.
One Last Chance For Weekend Lit Drops!
This Sunday we will be handing out literature at the J. J. Byrne
and Carroll Park Farmer’s Markets from 1 to 4 PM. We will also be
lit dropping in Carroll Gardens at the same time. Please let us know
if you can help out. This is your LAST WEEKEND to help the campaign!
And One Finale Debate to Attend
Thursday, October 29 at 7PM
This debate is sponsored by the Food Coalition along with other
community groups. Topics to be covered include health, sustainability,
school food and curriculum, expanding access to healthy food, social
justice for food workers and consumers and local healthy food sources.
The debate takes place at PS 10 (7th Ave & Prospect Ave) in Park Slope.
This is your final chance to hear David go up against Democrat Brad Lander
and Republican Joe Nardiello.
Internet Ads
We’ve made an internet ad purchase so people in district (with the following
zip codes: 11201, 11204, 11215, 11218, 11219, 11220, and 11231) should be
seeing David pop-up on their screen. Please email david@pechefskyforcitycouncil.com
if you see the adds!
David Scores Favorably in Two More Past Debates
Blogger Katia Kelly gave David a thumbs up for his performance at the Carroll Gardens
Neighborhood Association Debate. “I felt like Goldilocks,” she writes. “One candidate
was too angry (Republican Nardiello), one was too smooth (Democrat Lander), and one was just right (Green Pechefsky).” Read her entire coverage at:
http://pardonmeforasking.blogspot.com/2009/10/democrat-republican-and-green-candidate.html
And several of us were also on hand last Thursday night at the Central Brooklyn
Independent Democrats (CBID) meeting as David and Brad Lander discussed issues
pertaining to the workings of the city council and fielded questions as to what
they would do differently if they were elected. This is David’s milieu, of course,
and although once again the tone was congenial, it was clear to everyone in the room
that David was the more knowledgeable candidate.
And Don’t Forget the Halloween Parade!
We still need volunteers for the Park Slope Halloween parade to be in the parade and
to help make costumes and change David’s pedicab into a pirate ship!!! (We’ll park
the ’ship’ at the end of the route for the whole parade). The theme is ’spooky seas’
and we want to collect clean recyclables because we’ll have a polluted sea theme as
our ’spooky seas’. The parade is on October 31 starting at 6:30 from 7th Ave & 14th
Street and ending at the Old Stone House (5th Ave & 3rd Street). Please let me know
if you can help by responding to jonathan@pechefskyforcitycouncil.com

REV. BILLY TALEN CAMPAIGN
LESS THAN A WEEK TO GO!
Two-termers,
We are in the final strech of our campaign now! We want to invite
you to some wonderful events that will round out our last full
week before election day.
This Thursday we will be at Washington Square Park with the NYC
Climate Action Group and Rain Forest Relief. We will bring to tragic
life the use of tropical rain forest hardwood in our parks and put
some pressure on King Mike to be the environmental mayor he says he
is — dress like an animal or wear furry clothes (but not real fur,
of course)! Meet between the arch and the fountain at 5:30!
Shortly after this action, come to a House Party at the Torn Page Salon
on 22nd Street at 7:00pm. There will be food, drink, and much singing!
This Saturday is our big Zomberg Rampage event! We’ve got all the info
for you (including line-up location and time) at voterevbilly.org/events/halloween.
It’s not too late to get involved with us! Email zombies@voterevbilly.org for more info!
Also this Sunday, Nov. 1 is our grand finale show Hot Democracy at the Highline
Ballroom. Rev. Billy and The Life After Shopping Choir will be putting the odd
and back in God and the neighborhood back in the city! Tickets are $12, click
here to order them online. Doors are at noon, and the show starts at 1pm.
