DAVID AND CENA’S: 144 GARFIELD PLACE, PARK SLOPE: BUZZ 2L
PLEDGE TO GET A 100 SIGNATURES AND YOU GET A HUMOROUS PECHEFSKY FOR CITY COUNCIL T-SHIRT..
David and Cena will be hosting a barbeque at 144 Garfield Street ,
2L in Park Slope for people willing to help gather signatures to
get David on the ballot. We will have a short training session
before we light the grill.
Last week we held our first training for those motivated to help
gather the signatures that will put David on the ballot. There
were 12 of us but we really need about four times that number
helping to insure that we can vote for David in the fall.
I’m sure you’re thinking “hey, it’s gathering signatures, what
training do I need for that?” Indeed, it’s not difficult in the
least, but the Board of Elections pays very close attention to
details, so it’s important that all the right spaces are filled
in correctly or the signature page will be thrown out! Thus,
the need for a short training session.
To attend the barbeque and training (yes, they come as a package)
please send a message to jonathan@pechefskyforcitycouncil.com
If you already RSVPed last week, no need to do so again.

The 1st Amendathon
July 4th, 4 PM in the North Plaza of Union Square , NYC
Reverend Billy and Savitri D and the Life After Shopping Gospel Choir - arrested two years
ago for reciting the 1st Amendment’s 45 words before a Critical Mass bike-ride.
A drum circle gospel salsa sing-along of the guarantee of our freedom in the US Constitution.
A celebration of the history of Union Square , a re-affirmation that it is our National Historic
Landmark for its history of patriotic dissent.
A defense of the Pavilion against commercialization by wealthy friends of Bloomberg.
A protest against the violation of the 4th Amendment - the assurance against unreasonable
seizure - and the obvious racism in Ray Kelly’s “Stop and Frisk” program.
Come before the fire-works and enact your patriotism!

MEETING TO ESTABLISH CITYWIDE GREEN COMMITTEE
Thurs, June 25, 6:30P - 9P, Rev Billy HQ - 250 Lafayette St .
One of the key action items that emerged from our citywide
strategic planning process was to set up a citywide Green
committee consisting of representatives from all five boroughs’
county organizations as well as at large members.
This committee would start by co-ordinating borough activities
and pooling resources, moving toward unified branding and a
citywide structure.
Our proposal is to select up to fifteen representatives - 3 from
each borough. Representatives would commit to: a) doing regular
outreach to ascertain the desires and interests of Greens in
their areas, and b) attending meetings and participating
in working committees to further the progress of the Green Party
in New York City.
Who these reps will be, how they will be chosen, a basic
decision-making process, and specific initial projects to be
undertaken, will be the subject of this meeting.
A couple of items to be discussed include choosing a name for
this body (the recommended name is the Green Party of New York
City); setting up a process whereby the group can endorse
political actions and statements; and approving a piece of
citywide Green literature.
If you cannot attend the meeting but have thoughts on how the
citywide committee should be structured or what it should do,
please email info@greenpartynyc.org.

PARK SLOPE GREENS & GREEN PARTY OF BROOKLYN
HOLD PETITION TRAINING FOR NYC GREEN PARTY
CAMPAIGNS
Please join us on Monday June 15th at 7pm for a petition
training to help get our NYC Green Party Candidates on
the ballot for November!
Many of you know that due to our present lack of ballot
status, the Green Party is required to petition (get
signatures from registered voters) in order to get our candidates on the ballot this November. Thousands of VALID
signatures are required and many many volunteers will be needed this summer (beginning in July) to help gather those signatures.
At this training you will learn all you need to know in order to
become a petitioner! There are important rules to follow, but
it is really not difficult or scary. In fact, its actually fun, especially when you go with others!
The training will take place at the Park Slope Methodist
Church at the corner of 6th Avenue and 8th Street (basement/garden entrance) in Park Slope, Brooklyn .
Yummy refreshments will be served!
R train to 4th Avenue stop. F train to 9th Street stop.
Please Note: This monthly Park Slope Greens meeting usually
held on the second Monday of each month, has been postponed to June 15th in order to better accomodate the petitioning time line.
For more information please call Dani at (718) 788-2250

PECHEFSKY PLAYS CHESS IN PROSPECT PARK
Park Slope, Brooklyn – At the 9th Street and Prospect Park West entrance, David Pechefsky, Green Party candidate for City Council in District 39, will set up an oversized chess set and either play or teach children and adults the game on Saturday, May 16 from 10am to 2pm.
David is a big supporter of the ‘Chess in the Schools’ program. “Things like chess, music, art and languages shouldn’t be viewed as extras,” emphasizes Pechefsky, but should rather be viewed as an essential part of every child’s education.
Education is one of David’s primary concerns. He proposes a reduction on the across-the-board, one-size-fits-all testing, feeling that it is a waste of time and resources and believes the system as a whole puts too much stress on kids, parents, and teachers. “I just can’t fathom that I really have worry that my daughter getting an 85 on a 7th grade ELA project as opposed to a 90 is going to hurt her chances for high school admissions,” states Pechefsky. He also wants to see greater emphasis on civic and environmental education across the curriculum.
Pechefsky has a long history of working on education and after school programs, both during his 10 year stint on the central staff of the NY City Council and through direct community involvement. His older daughter first went to the cooperative childcare Roots and Wings and then to the cooperative pre-school Chickpeas Childcare, where David was co-coordinator in 2000-2001. While working on the central staff of the NY City Council, Pechefsky was instrumental in securing millions of dollars for a wide range of youth and after school programs including the dramatic expansion of Beacon School Programs – multi-service school based centers.
David is also a strong advocate for Parks. He is concerned that parks get adequate public funding and believes in a car-free Prospect Park. “Our parks should be a place to get away from the stresses of city life, but also be well maintained places that invite the kind of vibrant activity that makes New York great,” Pechefsky concludes.
